Overview of Client
Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) is a leading not-for-profit organisation dedicated to cancer control. CCQ is values-driven, community-focused, and committed to excellence and voluntarism.

Current Situation
Cancer Council Queensland’s (CCQ) Revenue and Operations team plays a vital role in ensuring the financial sustainability of the organisation. Their work is closely aligned with CCQ’s strategic plan, Navigating Cancer Together, and focuses on generating reliable income streams to support cancer research, prevention, and support services. Within this team, the Campaigns and Community Engagement unit is instrumental in delivering peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns, third-party events, and community-driven initiatives across the state.
Currently, the Revenue and Operations team contributes approximately $22 million annually, which accounts for 75% of CCQ’s total income. This revenue is generated through a diverse portfolio: $12 million from bequests and wills managed by a small team of three, $6 million from campaigns and events, $3 million from individual giving, and $2 million from corporate partnerships. This financial structure highlights the importance of each income stream and the need for strategic coordination to maintain and grow these contributions.
A key focus for CCQ is ensuring that fundraising efforts are clearly linked to the tangible impact of their work. Donors and supporters are more likely to engage when they understand how their contributions directly support cancer patients and research. This alignment between fundraising messages and service outcomes is essential for building trust and long-term support.
CCQ runs a variety of events to engage different demographics and communities. For example, the “Ponytail Project” targets 16-year-olds, encouraging them to grow and cut their hair to raise funds for wigs, creating a competitive and engaging school-based initiative. “Daffodil Day” is a high-visibility, brand-awareness event held annually, while “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea,” now in its 32nd year, is a flexible and widely adopted event where individuals host gatherings of any size to raise funds.
In addition to these flagship events, CCQ supports loyalty schemes for individual giving, offering recognition and rewards to encourage ongoing contributions. These programs help maintain donor engagement and foster a sense of community among supporters. The organisation also runs “Do It For Cancer” and “Relay for Life,” which are particularly successful in regional areas. These full-day events are physically and emotionally engaging, particularly in regional settings.
Overall, CCQ’s fundraising environment is dynamic and multifaceted, requiring a strategic and adaptable approach. The organisation must continue to innovate and tailor its campaigns to meet the diverse needs of Queensland communities while ensuring that every fundraising initiative clearly communicates its impact. This approach will be key to sustaining and growing the vital income streams that support CCQ’s mission.

Environment and Challenges
Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) operates in a highly competitive not-for-profit fundraising environment, where standing out and securing support requires constant innovation and strategic outreach. The organisation must continuously adapt to the shifting expectations of donors, supporters, and community partners, who increasingly seek transparency, impact, and meaningful engagement in the causes they support.
A key challenge lies in ensuring that all fundraising activities are closely aligned with CCQ’s broader organisational goals. This requires seamless coordination across departments and a clear understanding of how each campaign contributes to the overall mission. Additionally, managing a geographically dispersed team and delivering events across Queensland adds complexity to planning and execution, demanding strong leadership and logistical oversight.
CCQ must also remain agile in response to external factors such as changes in public health, economic conditions, and evolving community needs. These dynamics influence both the capacity to fundraise, and the types of support services required, making adaptability and foresight essential qualities for success in this role.
