RISK & COMPLIANCE MANAGER – Brisbane

  • Degree in Bus Admin + post grad in Risk Management or similar
  • Significant Risk & Compliance experience in a large, complex organisation
  • Based inner west Brisbane.

As the governing body for a broad and progressive Christian Church organisation, this non-profit business administers 250+ congregations along with multiple schools, colleges and many essential community service providers in Queensland. Its activities and relationships are intricate, complex and involve many very disparate groups of people with widely varying levels of skills and experience.

This senior leadership role, which was established in recent years – and now manages a multi-disciplinary team of seven professionals – is still evolving. It’s expected to gain further coherence as the organisational entity settles more comfortably into its new structure as a mature, contemporary and successful non-profit business.

Broad-brushed, the purpose of the position is to provide operational risk management and mitigation processes, while ensuring that compliance activities across this large, geographically diverse and markedly complex organisation are appropriately managed.

This is of course a straightforward remit for someone with your standing and experience. But it’s also one that will continue to prove challenging – in this situation – until you can convince everyone at every level to think about R & C and what it involves. ….. and to accept that is a beneficial force for change.

In any organisation, lots of people just don’t ‘get’ risk and compliance. In fact, anecdotal evidence tells us that many mistakenly believe it to be some form of punitive ‘red tape’.

So, you have a wonderful challenge ahead of you. Drawing on your persuasive leadership skills, you will need to establish many two-way lines of communication; set the record straight and convince all stakeholders that you and your team are there to protect their interests…to help and not to reprimand!

It’s a chance to share your expertise, ‘recruit’ new advocates, demonstrate your passion and in the process, do a large amount of general good in this organisation and across its communities.  

To take full responsibility for this large transformation project and to handle the day-to-day management of the Risk and Compliance portfolio and its team, you will need the advantage of significant previous experience in a regulated industry. Any work with property related assets and issues will be a bonus.

It’s expected you’ll bring experience with the internal audit function of a company, can demonstrate familiarity with AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009, Risk Management – Principles and Guidelines and have all the appropriate cards and licences for working with vulnerable groups in a non-profit environment.
