Far more challenge and returns than your ‘standard’ OT role!

Headquartered in Brisbane with a regional representation and a national reach, this support organisation has undergone major structural and cultural change in recent years. It has emerged as a freshly-minted, progressive and contemporary business that holds fast to its original commitment to deliver high quality services for people who are  blind and vision impaired in our communities.

Due to recent expansion, a long-term, full time position has become available for a well-qualified and dedicated Occupational Therapist who has experience working with people who have a disability that includes little or no vision.

To secure this exciting and absorbing position, you’ll need to be an emotionally mature individual with experience in a comparable role, some NDIS knowledge and the enthusiasm to learn more. Nationally accredited Occupational Therapy degree qualifications and registration with a professional body such as OTA or AHPA are essential.

Working closely with a seasoned Orientation and Mobility specialist and as an integral part of a multidisciplinary support team, much of your work will centre around getting to know your clients’ lives – their goals, aspirations, environment and movements. You’ll carefully assess their situations and determine exactly what will be needed for them to achieve the most rewarding of independent lifestyles.

As you design and implement purpose-built programs to achieve these goals, you will follow all the procedures that ensure they access all of the NDIS funding to which they’re entitled.

Another satisfying part of your remit will be in training people with vision impairment in how to use exciting new technology and equipment and working with them to find more effective ways of managing their daily routines and making the most effective use of any residual vision.

Among its many aspects this pleasantly busy and multi-faceted position will involve regular travel within an allocated region, both in your support role and to liaise with potential clients or conduct home/workplace environmental risk assessments.

You’ll also be given opportunities for continuing development and encouraged to conduct workshops so staff, volunteers and other stakeholders can increase their understanding of the impact of vision impairment on daily living activities.

For this genuinely interesting role, you will need to be a committed, professionally driven OT practitioner.

Organised and capable, you are an enthusiastic problem solver with excellent people skills, great communication, high levels of integrity, a strong work ethic and are able to bring a current First Aid Certificate and Open Driving Licence. Of particular value in this role will be your calm and unflappable demeanour.
