Lead response to Royal Commission & provide guidance as you work to elevate the legal capacities of this large, complex, community-focused Church.
Flexible role with options including PT and job share negotiable.
- Must be admitted to practise as a Solicitor.
- Significant post admission experience at a senior level is expected.
- Based Auchenflower with excellent negotiable rewards.
One of the largest Christian churches in Australia, this organisation manages around 250 congregations along with a large number of schools, colleges and numerous community services in Queensland.
It is currently on a revitalisation journey where priority directions and key change initiatives have been identified and will be implemented as part of the strategic plan. One of the areas marked for transformation and development is the elevation of the legal advice and services it offers across all aspects of its huge and complex business.
So the purpose of this newly created role – which operates at the most senior level of the organisation – is to provide trusted leadership in legal advice and support within its complex work environment. This will include litigation, mediation, risk and compliance, statutory and regulatory interpretation, church discipline and responding to key external factors such as Royal Commissions.
You can expect to lead the organisation’s response to the upcoming Royal Commission into ‘Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability’ announced in April 2019, by the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP.
But this is only one highly visible aspect of a big and busy role that will draw on your extensive knowledge of the law but also benefit from your personable and approachable personality. While it’s imperative that you command respect as a seasoned and knowledgeable lawyer, it’s also vital that you have a natural empathy for people across all levels.
You need to have the capacity to genuinely care about the hundreds of thousands of “ordinary” people whose lives are touched by this organisation. Everyone from school children to parents, parishioners to support workers, clergy, members of their congregations and a wide variety of diverse people in between will seek your advice on legal matters on a day-to-day basis.
You also need to be a good listener who is available, approachable and possessed of that wonderful gift for translating complex legalities into language that is easily understood by people of varying levels of experience.
It’s also important that you are curious, intuitive and forward thinking, since another vital part of this role is in identifying potential risks and challenging situations – long before they have a chance to develop – and in formulating the (innovative) steps to avoid them.
If you are a General Counsel of the seniority required for this role, you will probably have a comprehensive appreciation of the job entails. However, a detailed Position Description is available if you require.
You are also warmly invited to ring me (see my contact details below) if you would like to open a confidential discussion on the various options for work that the client is prepared to negotiate. Working flexible hours or part time, sharing the role and the opportunity for a work-at-home component have been tabled – but you may want to suggest another scenario that would better benefit your own work and life integration.
To be considered for this role, please forward your cover letter and your resume in WORD format quoting reference number NMGCPN-web to email@example.com or contact Nicola Manson on 07 3211 0001.
